Is inflammation a bad thing?

I've injured my knee. I have a policy with a $10,000 deductible (not a typo) so I'm not anxious to see a physician if I can avoid it. An acquaintance of mine who is an MD advised me to take Ibuprofen to suppress inflammation. My question is, didn't the inflammatory response evolve for a reason? Why would I want to suppress it?
