What was it like for German ex pats in Britain during WW2?

Were They expected to go back to Germany - or were they forced regardless of where they wanted to be? Perhaps public feeling would have made it impossible to remain in Britain at such a time? or were they supported in the community - especially as they may have been here for an extended period or married to a Brit? any knowledge or opinions on this would be greatly appreciated!....
